The Library

“The Library, comprises the center of a suite of three rooms in the remaining of the old house built by Robert Mylne. It was originally designed as the Dining Room, but appears to have been used as a Morning Room by Barlow Trecothick in the late 1700’s.  Barlow had the room decorated with “India” paper which was recorded in a 1911 catalogue as ” … hand-painted Chinese paper reputed to be well over a Century old and representing Oriental Pastoral scenes.” Unfortunately, the wallpaper was removed sometime between 1911 and 1953.  A description of the house published in 1842 shows that the room was restored at that time to a Dining Room. However, by 1900 it was designated as the Chinese Drawing Room.”
